Second instalment, no preference intended.

Page 1 got a bit unwieldy, so here's more! I guess a third page is imminent too! It looks as though there are some new acts emerging over the water, and I keep recalling others from the past as well!.

US

Tupac

No point denying that this guy had some influence, indeed still has years after his death. Radical American Poetry is a valid art form. It tends to be colourful and "tells it as it is" but is too easily abused for commercial reasons. The site link is rather a sad one, since Ryan McCool, the site creator, died in a car wreck 02 02 2000. The site remains to his memory. There is a lot there, take a look. Updates are unlikely it seems.

1973-

The Ramones

Punk Originators.

Web page based on the UK teletext obituary for Joey.

Additional Note on Dee Dee.

1991-

Blink182

Blink182 follow in true punk tradition. (medical fixation too!)

Extrovert punk band. For an individual page on the band and links elsewhere, see * Ryan's page. The band have a rebellious lyric style, one of the hallmarks of a "punk" band. Fans have also seen rather a lot of the three members! That fact has led to critics accusing them of being shallow sensationalists with limited musical range.

New Live Album

Ceefax comment by "Pete" that Blink 182 are a fake punk band. Check the note below and the linked Joey Ramone page here. Also see Comments page2.

Newly released Album recorded live. There are apparently two different sleeves! (The nurse has different gloves?). At 72 mins. you get a lot of playing time! Is * Ryan planning on a review? It'll take up more space than mine on Radiohead and Green Day! *note this is Ryan Elliott. who has his own webpages elsewhere (and he might even add to them if he can dodge his Business Studies teacher. (He needs to work harder!)

Canada

1984-1996

Skinny Puppy

Front Line Assembly. formed by Wilhelm Schroeder (Bill Leeb), and its numerous off-shoots -- Noise Unit, Delerium and Intermix

"Industrial" trio, apparently, and of considerable influence according to Jason on teletext. The band artwork is very striking too! A link to Nine Inch Nails, a more recent combo. Sleeve is BRAP. There is a large back catalogue but the band broke up and lost the keyboardist Dwayne Goettel who had joined the band after a tour in 1985 for the "Bites" album.replacing Bill Leeb who played on the album.

Excellent web link

The link after this note is very detailed. Apparently the band sound is not pure "Industrial", having several distinct elements. Kraftwerke are mentioned (the band members were teenagers at the time of that bands middle period. Refer to the link for much more. http://www.waste.org/lastsigh/profiles/puppyprofilea.htm

1999-US

Low on Tugboat Records
The first single "Joan of Arc" was well reviewed, but I missed it! The label has a VERY interesting back catalogue at reasonable prices too. A band video is available too.

An interesting band, with a slow moving minimalist style. Current single "Dinosaur Act" has near thunderous bass. I'm not sure if they have a particular band in mind, but look closely at the guitar strings!

Sparklehorse

Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot has got to be the oddest album title ever! It is musically very impressive.

1968-71

Iron Butterfly

A mail article in NME reminded me of one of this "prog rock" or "heavy metal" band's albums. "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida"(1968) At the time the lead guitar was 17 year old Erik Brann. The title track is an epic 17.05! One problem, How do you scan a 12" sleeve on an A4 scanner! OK I cheated! Anyone know what happened to Erik?

19

Everclear

"Wonderful" new single. More details later. "Songs From an American Movie" is now on volume 2.

19

Patti Smith

Horses was the album which brought her to our attention. See also Ramones.

1963-96

Eva Cassidy

Songbird

She has become a huge posthumous seller. A compilation album "Songbird" which is a cross-section of Folk, Blues and Jazz has shot into the charts on both sides of the Atlantic. BBC2 "Top of The Pops 2" and Terry Wogan two years ago started the big interest. She seems to have been similar to some of the great early female vocalists. It seems that she will also become one of the influential artists too. There are already excellent webpages. Eva was also an accomplished Artist (in paint) and there is a "Foundation" bearing her name. A song "Tall Trees in Georgia" was influential on her.

New album "Imagine" has been compiled from the archives. All unreleased material and BRILLIANT!!! I don't know how much more there is, but if it's half as good as this it deserves release too. The album hit the top in the UK first week, and Coldplay will be hard pressed to displace it - I've got both, so my buys cancel out!

Her voice "cuts straight into your heart." (Terry Wogan). The tapes, mostly from Blues Alley studios, were compiled by a handful of producers in the Washington area and then published posthumously. Al Dale, a talent spotter says "She had this amazing voice, but no idea anyone would ever want to pay to hear her. When I first heard her voice in a studio I couldn't see her and expected a black singer to emerge from the booth, her voice was so massive. Then this little blonde thing popped out from behind the door."

David Ackles

The album "American Gothic" is a classic. The epic "Montana Song" tells a complete family history, how a farming family loses contact with the land over the generations. It is virtually a tone poem in the classical sense and runs rings round the current narrative RAP style.

Paul Fenton

Canadian slide guitarist with many very significant contacts. Refer to his website. His latest single (in a long line) is Vancouver Blue. You can download MP3 versions of several tracks from the website, and there is a great deal of interesting reading there, including gear used etc. Paul apparently has quite a big selection of guitars and amplification.

The Eagles

"Hotel California" is the album which first springs to mind. As to whether there is such a place I am none too sure as yet.

1988*-

Mercury Rev.

The "Deserters Songs" album is often mentioned in passing, but I also rate The live track "Car Wash Hair" on CD2 of "Goddess on a Hiway", which has an impressive long instrumental coda. The track reminds me melodically of an Ian McCulloch track (can't put a title to it just yet, but watch this space.)

Just looked up the Mercury Rev website, which is being reactivated apparently. Odd, but they also mention "Car Wash Hair" as well! Also on the "Opus40" single, look up the excellent "cover" of Dylan's "He Was a Friend of Mine", another live track.
