Composers Page 4 and for once actually in Alphabetical Order! |
This page is intended to be composers of the last century. There may be a few elsewhere too, and several were born in the 19th. Century. There are a few composers who have been introduced by the UK station Classic FM. This has a tendency to play sections of works out of context, and to spin off the compilation CDs of such fragments. This does spread awareness, but I would encourage experiments with complete works! UK Radio3 is such a station. |

Page prompted in part by a poster in the Radiohead Newsgroup. Work that one out! |
John Adams |
He is an interesting composer. One of the "minimalist" school, but not so static as Steve Reich. He worked with Kent Nagano when he was in charge at the Halle. Nice chap too! |
Leonard Bernstein |
A remarkable talent, composer, pianist, musicologist. There is a huge television archive of the latter in illustrated lectures which should soon appear on DVD. He was, perhaps, along with George Gershwin one of the first crossover artists. By that of course I mean West Side Story. |
Aaron Copland |
Another American composer, very well known for the "Fanfare For The Common Man", Rodeo, Appalachian Spring and other works. |
Philip Glass |
Mark Burgess of the Chameleons used music by Glass on the "Sons of God" CD. It works very well. |
James Macmillan |
Has written a number of very striking works. Many are programmatic or have a literary / historical source. |
Krysztov Penderecki |
The Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima is a gripping statement! There are also works like the St Luke Passion on a huge scale. The Violin concerto is also approachable. |
Einojuhani Rautavaara |
See Philadelphia Orch link. Also Ondine Records.(8th. Symphony) Catalyst releases also. |
Finnish composer. Works include the "CantusArcticus" an intriguing blend of orchestral sound and birdsong. |
John Tavener |
Not to be confused with John Taverner, another English composer oddly enough. "The Celtic Requiem" and "In Alium" are both very interesting! The former was released on the Apple label. There are also BBC Prom tapes, worth issuing! |
