One of the reports authors, Daniele Mandrioli, at the Ramazzini Institute in Bologna, Italy, said significant and potentially detrimental effects from glyphosate had been detected in the gut bacteria of rat pups born to mothers, who appeared to have been unaffected themselves. Prof Philip J Landrigan, of New Yorks Icahn School of Medicine, and also one of the research team, said: These early warnings must be further investigated in a comprehensive long-term study. He added that serious health effects from the chemical might manifest as long-term cancer risk: That might affect a huge number of people, given the planet-wide use of the glyphosate-based herbicides. |
Scott Partridge, Monsantos VP for global strategy told the Guardian: The Ramazzini Institute is an activist organisation with an agenda that they have not disclosed as part of their crowdfunding efforts. They wish to support a ban on glyphosate and they have a long history of rendering opinions not supported by regulatory testing agencies. This is not about genuine research, he added. All the research to date has demonstrated that there is no link between glyphosate and cancer. In 2017, the Ramazinni Institute was criticised by members of the US Congress, which has provided it with funding. US congress members have also probed funding for the IARC. |

A Hard Look at 3 Myths about Genetically Modified Crops Dated May 1st 2013. |
Superweeds? Suicides? Stealthy genes? The true, the false and the still unknown about transgenic crops |
Here, Nature takes a look at three pressing questions: are GM crops fuelling the rise of herbicide-resistant superweeds? Are they driving farmers in India to suicide? And are the foreign transgenes in GM crops spreading into other plants? These controversial case studies show how blame shifts, myths are spread and cultural insensitivities can inflame debate. |
Twenty-four glyphosate-resistant weed species have been identified since Roundup-tolerant crops were introduced in 1996. But herbicide resistance is a problem for farmers regardless of whether they plant GM crops. Some 64 weed species are resistant to the herbicide atrazine, for example, and no crops have been genetically modified to withstand it |

Glyphosate is probably carcinogenic in humans.(dated 2015) Note the study says "Probably" not "Is" Does exposure to "Roundup" double the risk? |

How can consumers reduce their exposures to these pesticides? When we eat GE foods, we are taking a dose of pesticides with them. Right now, we cant tell which foods are genetically engineered. We have to guess. EWG believes people the right to know which foods are genetically engineered. What can you do? Tell your elected representatives to support legislation to label GE foods. |

Residues in baby foods etc - pre harvest spraying is a questionable practice in my opinion. Dated 30th September 2016 Oats are not genetically engineered. But Monsanto has encouraged farmers to spray oats and other non-genetically modified crops with its glyphosate-based Roundup herbicides shortly before harvest. The practice can help dry down and even out the maturity of the crop. A preharvest weed control application is an excellent management strategy to not only control perennial weeds, but to facilitate harvest management and get a head start on next years crop, according to a Monsanto pre-harvest staging guide. Glyphosate is also used on wheat shortly before harvest in this way, as well as on other crops. A division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture known as the Grain Inspection, Packers & Stockyards Administration (GIPSA) has been testing wheat for glyphosate residues for years for export purposes and have detected the residues in more than 40 percent of hundreds of wheat samples examined in fiscal 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. This pre harvest spraying is the most likely reason for high Glyphosate levels. STOP doing it! |

Monsanto has said repeatedly that there are no legitimate safety concerns regarding glyphosate when it is used as intended, and that toxicological studies in animals have demonstrated that glyphosate does not cause cancer, birth defects, DNA damage, nervous system effects, immune system effects, endocrine disruption or reproductive problems. |
In the report issued Monday, the groups call for a permanent ban on the use of glyphosate as a pre-harvest drying agent because of the residue levels. Why spray a weedkiller on crops AFTER they have grown? |
