Muse Page 2 (Origin Of Symmetry comments)
Comment on Channel 4 (Void) that the album is "horribly overblown and self important" I beg to differ on that! The tracks are sometimes long and episodic in a "classical", yes Classical style, but all work well when considered in that sense. Good on stage too (Matt with flame red hair!) as seen on today's webcast from Heaton Park Manchester! I rate OOS well ahead of Amnesiac melodically, and possibly musically too!

Pipped by Travis and d12. |
Excellent site revision by Simon! He has downloadable MP3 files of "Origin of Symmetry" the new album. I guess these will go soon though? Check out the link "unofficial" below. Time I checked the other links again too! Just played the "Bliss" clip! Excellent! Melodic, multi tracked and Matt on great form vocally too! |
|
The "negative" shot right is on Simon's site above the list of downloads. The quality is high, though they are not full length. Still, Why grumble! Get the album ordered! |

Origin Of Symmetry. WOW! Not played it all yet. Keep putting tracks on repeat! Matt has moved in leaps and bounds here. OK tracks are long and episodic (quasi classical style in fact) but thats NOT a justification for some of the criticism. Comment on Channel 4 that it's "horribly overblown and self important". I have posted the whole article on my comments page. "Pop" music does NOT have to be in 3 min units! That should have "died out" with the older 7" single playing time. Even that has now been extended, and I still buy 7" singles! Really would like to see Muse at the Bridgewater Hall! (see the Halle page here for the reason!) |

Any other sites out there to add to this links section? Bobs FAQ site perhaps? |

The Original Muscle Museum website is now demolished. I have to check the Fans website mentioned above. The link is to the old site, the displayed URL will be the new one. Lyrics for most tracks were on the unofficial site run by Simon, but that currently has download links. Simon also has an unofficial Coldplay site. This band show a wide range of influences and a lot of creativity. Check out "Unintended" for a good song and excellent video. The video for New Born is also very well done! Review should appear tomorrow (Monday 25th.) I hope. Started, but will be finished later. Bliss demands a replay! |

What follows is my personal review of "Origin Of Symmetry". I approach it as a confirned fan of both MUSE and Radiohead. I also have, as you have guessed perhaps from the rest of this site, a wide appreciation of "classical" music as well. |

Enhanced Element.MUSE TV. Quicktime used. There is not a great deal of space left on the CD, so the band have opted for an internet linkup. This is a problem if you don't have the Net though! |

Feeling Good. New Single Due Nov 19th. |
|
|
Feeling Good. Anthony Newley, Leslie Bricusse. NOT by Matt! |
I have not heard the Nina Simone version of Feeling Good, but cannot consider the Muse version as a "cover"! An interpretation, yes, but not a cover in the "boyband / girlband" sense. Most of those are relatively close to the originals. |
|
All the text below was written as I listened, so is somewhat analytical in style. |

1 New Born kicks off the album very strongly. Deceptive rippling keyboard? and bass, with a clear lyrical line, then a tempo shift, and Fuzz Guitar breaks in, with a much heavier bass. The lyrics resume, over an insistent beat, with a very impressive climactic section instrumentally and vocally: the opening almost reappears thematically, but with guitar histrionics as well. A third lyrical phase, over the "insistent" section follows, repeating the climax as before. A coda then follows, winding down to a strange link passage - to |
7 Micro Cuts Begins with scale passages and pulsing syncopated chords over steady drums reminds me of something. Vocals enter (very high) at 30 secs Almost painful! Climax at (1.05). 1.33 repeats. 2.10 extreme high climax, inc guitar? at extreme high! Then instrumental, with at 3.05 a sudden break with more traditional guitar/bass/drums passage finally stopping without fadeout! I get the feeling 'cos of the vocal extreme that this would not be a wise stage song! |
|
2 Bliss Is the first track I heard thanks to Simon. Again it begins with rippling keyboards, which run through the whole track, but Bass and drums crash in and Matt joins in vocally, soaring majestically! The sections repeat for a second time, but with variations. The opening returns almost unchanged, then runs into the soaring vocal section again, with a further reprise of the opening at the close - fades. This is one hell of an impressive track! Play it again! |
8 Screenager Very quiet start here! More exotic percussion, guitar near acoustic. (1.29) keyboard effects again as Matt ascends the scales again vocally. (2.16) a repeat again, "Cracks in the memory. For the holes in our souls" (3.00) builds as before, Quasi wordless in places. The voice is almost an instrumental line. Short coda very like the start. Tinkling percussion fades away. |
|
3 Space Dementia Quiet piano over "atmospherics", lead to piano trills under bass and drums. Lower register vocals here at first, but again a high climax, followed by a gentler section, with processed? vocals and a lot of keyboard? effects. Again the sections repeat, with later a long wordless, vocal and a coda with huge chords, marching over a series of effects, possibly synthesised or guitar, leading to a phased discordant close! This needs repeating too. Its so unusual! (Very apt title!) |
9 Darkshines The whole band begin here, with very clean guitar effects over steady backing. (0.18 vocal entry, relaxed and breathy, but at 0.51 the "Darkshines" lyric causes a climax with staccato drums, followed by guitar solo. The breathy vocal section is reprised (1.32), as is the climax, with staccato drums and angry guitar! 2.39 solo guitar modulations again, over stready accompaniment. At 3.14 the mood changes, with clean guitar lines, until at 3.50 staccato drums return as "Darkshines" passage resumes. Ending simply disintegrates! |
|
4 Hyper Music Feedback and fragmentary guitar open, leading to a section not unlike "Taxman" by the Beatles! Wordless vocals begin, with very strong bass and drums as the lyrics proper begin. A staccato section brings the "Taxman" section again, but much of the track is intricate Bass, drums and vocal. The sections again repeat, in order. Guitar is further back in the mix until nearer the close, when low feedback again is used with guitar fragments again. |
10 Feeling Good There has to be a total break here and we get it, with very sparse instrumentation at the start Breaking at "Feeling Good"(0.39) into a heavier passage. At 1.19 Processed vocals are used, breaking back into the "Feeling Good" section."New Dawn, New Life" A higher wordless?(2.30) section follows over very light backing which then fades (on "Feeling Good!"), leading into the concluding track. |
|
5 Plug In Baby Was not surprisingly the first single from the album. It is linked here by a feedback fragment, but springs into life with complex bass and guitar which has a really intricate line. The vocal line is against bass and drums, but also a keyboard line too. There is a well constructed Chorus "My Plug in Baby Crucifies My enemies" The whole is then repeated with Matt in High register yet again at the close until the guitar and bass bring the feedback as, in effect a short coda again. |
11 Megalomania This track feels different from the start, with swirling keyboards and wordless vocal (0.40) A shift leads to the vocal proper. As the sound of the pipe organ enters we are taken by surprise (1.48) with a Major climactic passage! Once again the sections repeat, but with the organ added this time as well. The impressive climax is extended further on the reprise, with Matts high vocals blending in too, and a final major Chord to end with! This is very appropriate given the title! Nice touch Matt! I wonder if he knows "Archangel" by the Walker Brothers? This too demands a reprise!

6 Citizen Erased Is another long track.Guitar effects begin, Then the others join in (0.22), with chords over drums. This continues with more augmentation (0.45) under Matt's Mid range vocal line. (1.28) A short instrument only section is followed by higher register vocals and then (1.57) a fade to a much gentler section with keyboard? guitar and other effects. This builds (with multi track vocals) later until (3.42) the chordal section reappears, but now with guitar glissando and other very spectacular effects. At 4.56 another new section, cymbals, bass, wordless vocal and both keyboard and guitar effects. (6.00) quiet chords, wordless vocals, atmospherics,(6.36) "Wash away, clean your body" Very delicate vocals here. The track fades to atmospheric loops. Repeat play strongly suggested. |
