New to the site or from other pages.

This is the first new music webpage of 2002. I guess You can thank / blame Simon for it! Silverchair being his suggestion. A teen trio (in 1994) from Australia. Competition winners, but NOT like the UK manufactured acts (which shall remain nameless!) At least one has Stepped into the history books!

The UK scene is obsessed with "the new Coldplay" etc. despite the fact that the original one is still doing fine. The turnover rate is very high, pushed along, I suspect by the "boyband" model. (thats boys who smile, "dance" and sing, but very little else. (certainly not play or write much!)

Silverchair

An early pic (dated 1994)

For more info, visit the really comprehensive band site. All the material here is there and a LOT more. I acknowledge borrowing it all.

Silverchair It may be a little slow. but worth the wait!

The release of Frogstomp in 1995 brought on a lot of quick fame to the then 15 and 16 year old boys from the suburbs of Merewether, Australia. After winning a national demo competition and releasing two singles, Tomorrow and Pure Massacre, that have since then made it to the ranks of some of the top selling Australian singles, the band decided that they should sign on with a record company since the deal was right there waiting for them. Murmur, an Australian branch of Sony and Epic records, helped the band launch the 11 track Frogstomp which was recorded in just 9 days. It turned out to be a huge success, selling about 3 million copies world-wide. Some acts might take a hint from that timescale perhaps?

A neighbor told the band in 1994 of a national demo competition and told them they should enter. Nomad, an Australian music video show, was sponsoring the "Pick Me" demo contest. First-place prize was a free video shoot and an afternoon in the recording studio of Triple J, Australia's national alternative rock station. The band bought a spot in a cheap studio for $75 and recorded a rough, 6-minute version of "Tomorrow". They sent it in, thinking that there was no way it would win. To their surprise, "Tomorrow" was chosen out of more than 800 entries. At least the band existed BEFORE the competition instead of being manufactured for it!

Hmm, not in the 2000 edition of Rare record guide. {:o(

Down to Simon (15) They have been around for a while, more info here soon, and on the band site.

For this and other Antipodean material, like the Avalanches, try here. (link to the right)

See Whammo.com site

Where were they?

The band have just ended a year out, after "Neon Ballroom" the "breakthrough album", which was a good idea, since they were apparently under considerable pressure, particularly Daniel, both performing and completing education. That's the album most of you will have heard of.

New Album

In August 2001 Silverchair started recording a new album with Producer David Bottrill (Tool, Peter Gabriel, King Crimson) which will be released early in 2002. See the site for pre-ordering the first single. I've just done so (Wammo.com.au) and added "Freak" and "Frogstomp" as well. so lets see how long it takes! (J8th)

Not all actual real brothers, but what's new in that! The site is one of those with microscopic text which will not enlarge, but is a useful one.

What_If is a track I am now very familiar with!

Great vocal feeling here. Guitar effects may be a tad limited (on tracks heard so far - Higher CD) but this is well structured rock! An impressive jam session on that CD incidentally!
