Pat do you agree with Frank that guns should be removed from USA?

Amendment to it.

More discussion

Can you own a gun for self defense in UK?

Are self defence weapons legal in the UK? In the UK, it's illegal for any member of the public to carry a lethal or non-lethal self defence weapon. The maximum sentence for possessing a weapon in the UK is 6 years in prison, whilst possessing firearms is 10 years.

My personal opinions.

Restriction?

They should be considerably restricted. Nobody should be carrying "hunting rifles" in an urban situation or places where there is no hunting. The background checks made do not seem to be effective.

Militias?

Only police and LEGAL security should be allowed. Every state in theory does not allow illegal "militias". Why then are there so many?

President calls for.

Joe Biden makes fresh call for ban on assault weapons as Texas gunman named.

European example.

PatrickMurphy: Switzerland has a large number of guns, but the owners are trained and screened. The guns are also safely stored and not "carried".

What the result is.

PatrickMurphy: It does not have the horrendous level of gun injuries and fatalities like USA does.

MikeReno: That is true Patrick

Initial reasoning. IMHO this reason is no longer valid

Why local militias were so important?

Beginning in 1636 regiments were formed by region and county comprising of several companies within their designated geographic area. In times of war, the militia served as the immediate defense during an attack, or as a pool of available soldiers to be drafted for extended service. Dated 6 Nov 2021

In colonial times.

Why do you think the British wanted to disarm the local militias in the colonies?

The British government wanted to seize the lawfully owned firearms of the colonists. If British troops could disarm the militia, there would be less of a threat to their control. This is one of the reasons the Second Amendment was added to the Constitution.

If the founders were alive today, I believe they would be very concerned – because the Constitution is clear that the only militias protected by the Second Amendment are “well-regulated” units authorized and controlled by state governments, not a private citizen militia. ** see below.

Today, the militia in all 50 states is the National Guard. In California, as Benitez notes in his opinion, the militia also includes the State Guard, a force trained and equipped by the government. There is nothing informal about it.

MajorDude613: militias are protected under the Constitution **

madseason88: you do realize that the government is made up of Americans? so when people say we may need to take up arms against the government that means taking up arms against other Americans.

Vet1961: 2nd amendment isn't for hunting, it is to allow you to protect yourself from the government!!

PatrickMurphy: That is what the amendment refers to to justify the public holding guns. There is zero need for militias in a democracy.
MajorDude613: there is because sometimes those politicians forget their place
MajorDude613: the founder knew this and this is why they put in the 2nd ammendment
MajorDude613: founders
